Brightspace/Classes: Solution to Student's Quiz Attempt Stuck In Progress

Body

Introduction

Occasionally, you will see that while everyone else in your class has submitted their quiz, one student’s attempt is still marked as “In Progress”, preventing you from seeing and grading their answers. To resolve this issue, follow the steps below.

This article is divided into different sections. Please click on the desired link to jump to that section:

Instructions

Plan A: Having the Student Submit Their Quiz

  1. On the blue course navigation bar, click on Activities > Quizzes.
  2. Find the desired quiz from the list, click the chevron to its right, and select Edit from the drop-down menu.
    • Note: You can also click on the name of the test itself to be taken to the Edit screen.
  3. On the Edit Quiz screen, expand the Availability Dates & Conditions tab.
  4. Click Manage Special Access in blue
  5. Click the grey Add Users to Special Access button.
  6. On the Add Special Access screen, in the Properties section, set the Has End Date to be in the future, giving the student enough time to go back in and click Submit.
  7. In the Timing section, if the time limit has expired, override it to give the student more time.
  8. Underneath When the Time Limit Expires, make sure that the top option, Automatically submit the quiz attempt is selected.
  9. In the Users section, click the checkbox of the appropriate student, and then click the blue Add Special Access button at the bottom to save your changes.
  10. The student should now be able to go in and submit their exam, but will be unable to alter their test or answers in any other way.

Note: On the student end, it will seem as though they can change their answers and save these changes; this is an illusion. Their original answers have already been recorded and the grade will be based only on the student’s actions before the timer expired.

Plan B: Submitting the Exam on the Student’s Behalf

If technical or other issues are preventing the student from submitting their own exam, as a last resort it is possible for you to submit the exam on their behalf. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the blue course navigation bar, click on Activities > Quizzes.
  2. Find the desired quiz from the list, click the chevron to its right, and select Grade from the drop-down menu.
  3. You will be taken to a list of users in the course; you likely will not see the student’s name here. Click (in blue)
    Show Search Options.
  4. In the expanded search, change the Restrict to field to Users with attempts in progress and click on the magnifying glass icon to perform the search.
  5. The student should now appear. Click the two silhouettes icon to enter the quiz as the student and click Submit for them.
  6. Alternatively, if you wish to clear the attempt, you can check the checkbox to the left of the attempt, and click the Reset button above (trash can icon) to clear the attempt.
